Why thickness tolerance matters

Variation in finished-board thickness can affect how thin MDF enters the buyer's next production stage. Lamination, cutting, stacking, assembly and component fitting may each have different dimensional requirements.

For furniture components, cabinet parts and decorative processing, the acceptable result depends on the complete component and production method. Packaging and handling requirements should also be considered where thin sheets are stacked or moved as bundles.

Nominal thickness and actual thickness

Nominal thickness is the thickness named in the purchase specification. Actual thickness is the value obtained when a finished board is measured. The agreed acceptance requirement determines how the measured result is assessed against the nominal value.

Xinyao publishes thin MDF options across an approximate 0.8–6 mm range, but the published product information does not state a universal plus-or-minus tolerance. A required numeric limit must be confirmed for the specific order rather than inferred from the product range.

How Xinyao checks MDF thickness

Current Xinyao buyer documents state that finished-board thickness is measured against the confirmed order specification. The manufacturing information also identifies continuous pressing, sanding, production monitoring and finished-board inspection as parts of the production and control process.

The published documents do not identify a measurement tool, sampling quantity, measurement positions or a universal numeric tolerance. Buyers who require a particular inspection method or report format should include those requirements in the specification review before production.

What buyers should specify
